Heading to Bali to refill your cup? This wellness retreat in Ubud’s jungle deserves a spot on your itinerary

From Sydney to Bangkok, Capella Hotels and Resorts are the epitome of bespoke luxury. But their most intriguing destination might just be in the leafy highlands of Ubud, where a sprawling camp with an ethos rooted in traditional Balinese wellness awaits.
With early morning mist and the harmony of birdsong filling the air, you’d be forgiven for disbelieving that Capella Ubud is just a 20 minute car ride from the bustling centre of Ubud. Weaving through the coconut trees so as not to disrupt the lush jungle of the Keliki village it inhabits, the resort is a collection of 22 tents and one tented lodge encircling a 20-metre heated pool, two restaurants, a gym, a spa, and a lounge. Don’t be fooled by the word ‘tent’. Each structure features a private pool and a unique interpretation of 1800s decadence.
Beyond the five-star glamour, it’s the extensive holistic wellness programme that really makes it shine. From Auriga, the hotel’s opulent tented spa, to forest meditation, traditional water purification, yoga and pranayama classes, guests have the chance to completely switch off. Read on for our highlights after a day spent recharging in the jungle.
The very essence of Capella Ubud exudes tranquility, so it’s almost impossible to ignore the call to disconnect to reconnect. Venture down to the banks of the Wos River and you’ll find a deck that’s ideal for forest meditation. Guided by a Camp Ranger with extensive knowledge of the surrounding rainforest, it’s a chance to cleanse your energy, realign your chakras, and quiet your thoughts. Ending with a brief but magical water blessing at the resident Keliki temple, it was a 60 minute lesson in the healing power of being completely present.
If you’re still building up to the stillness a meditation practice requires, the Balance Spa Day Retreat offers your choice of yoga, meditation, or personal training, so you can curate your journey according to your personal preferences.
A meal at Mad’s Lange—the camp’s open-air dining room—with a birds-eye view of the turquoise swimming pool, concluded our wellness journey. Offering a taste of traditional Indonesian Cuisine, and an à la carte selection of International fare, it’s a gastronomical experience designed to leave you feeling well-fed.
Vegetables, herbs, spices, and meat are sourced from local farmers and the camp’s garden, while the freshest seafood is imported from regional waters, so opting for the Camp Nasi Goreng—a twist on the classic with wagyu beef satay and fresh shellfish—was a no brainer. The warm sourdough with salt-crusted butter and olive oil was also a welcome treat, but a foray into the dessert menu with the pandan fermented rice pudding provided the perfect finisher.
The Pure Spa Day Retreat offers Balinese Afternoon Tea served by the pool, an equally delicious way to end your day at Capella Ubud if you prefer to graze.
Renowned as the ‘Island of the Gods’, Bali’s energy holds a special type of healing frequency, especially for travellers seeking spiritual realignment. Capella Ubud doesn’t just embody this energy, it invites guests to participate in it. Whether you have a week, a day, or a few hours to spend luxuriating in the uniquely restorative atmosphere, you’ll likely leave with the feeling that something within you has finally clicked into place.
