Emma Lewisham on Circular Beauty, Skincare Essentials and Why She’s Done With More

The beauty industry has been built on new launches, trends and the promise that the next product will change everything, however there are few brands and one founder in particular, bucking this trend. Emma Lewisham has spent the last few years advocating for something altogether less glamorous, restraint.

As the founder of one of the world’s first circular luxury beauty brands, Emma Lewisham has challenged beauty’s take-make-waste model while building a business that proves sustainability and luxury don’t have to exist at opposite ends of the spectrum. But spending years examining what we consume has also transformed her personal relationship with beauty.

“When you understand what is taken from the earth to produce something, and what is left behind afterwards, it becomes very hard to engage with consumption in the same way again,” she tells The SHFT.

The shift has influenced everything from how she shops to what she keeps in her bathroom cabinet. Rather than accumulating products, she’s become increasingly drawn to owning fewer things and thinking more deeply about their full lifecycle.

“I feel a real responsibility for what I bring into my life and ultimately throw away,” she says. “I’m drawn to products that have been considered from every angle, not just whether they work, but what happens afterwards.”

It’s a philosophy that sits at the heart of Emma Lewisham’s refill system, which prevents new packaging from being created and significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to purchasing a new bottle each time. But it’s also become a personal lens through which she views modern luxury.

That doesn’t mean she’s abandoned performance. Far from it.

If there is one product she refuses to be without, it’s the brand’s Skin Reset Serum, the first formula the company ever created and, she admits, still the one she reaches for every day.

“It was designed to solve a problem rather than chase a trend,” she says. Developed over several years alongside a team of scientists, the serum combines more than 20 active ingredients that work across multiple pathways in the skin. For Lewisham, its appeal lies not in a hero ingredient but in the complexity of the formulation itself.

“It’s the product I’ve used through hyperpigmentation, long workdays and different life stages. It’s become an anchor in my routine.”

Yet despite running a skincare company, Lewisham’s daily approach isn’t particularly complicated. Her philosophy centres on consistency rather than perfection.

At Emma Lewisham, the team talks about focusing on the fundamentals: cleansing, treating, hydrating and protecting. The same approach guides her own routine.  One category, however, remains entirely non-negotiable.  A truly excellent SPF,” she says without hesitation.

It’s the product she believes everyone should invest in, regardless of age or skin type. While many formulas promise protection, she argues that texture is what ultimately determines whether people use sunscreen consistently.

“People often skip SPF because they don’t enjoy wearing it. If the texture isn’t right, it doesn’t matter how effective it is on paper.”

Away from skincare, her beauty cupboard is perhaps more personal than people might expect. Alongside high-performance formulations sits a fragrance once worn by her mother, kept as much for nostalgia as for scent.  “It’s a reminder of her,” she says.

Travel essentials reveal a similarly holistic approach to wellbeing. A sleep mask, melatonin and a few carefully chosen products always make the packing list, helping her manage long-haul flights and changing time zones. Wellness, she explains, is rarely about a single habit. It’s about supporting the body in small, consistent ways.

That same thinking extends to beauty trends. In an industry that often encourages consumers to add another serum, another step or another treatment, Lewisham finds herself moving in the opposite direction.

“The beauty industry has traditionally encouraged us to layer and add more,” she says. “Increasingly, I think the future lies in understanding synergy and choosing products that genuinely work together.”  In other words, less but better.

When asked when she feels most beautiful, her answer has little to do with skincare at all.  Not after a facial. Not after applying her favourite products.

Instead, it’s in the moments that bring her back to herself: spending time at home with family, walking her dog by the sea, or creating enough space to feel present.

Perhaps that’s the most interesting thing about Lewisham’s approach to beauty. Despite building a luxury skincare empire, she doesn’t see beauty as something that comes from accumulation, everything is built around intention.  And in a culture constantly encouraging us to buy more, that may be the most radical beauty philosophy of all.
