I’m a Fashion Editor Who Just Got Back from Cape Town—Here’s What You Should Actually Pack
Bianca Alleyne
A practical guide to packing for Cape Town—from outfit formulas to the pieces that actually work across city, coast and vineyard.
Packing for a trip any trip could put you and your baggage allowance under strain, but with the variety of experiences that Cape Town has to offer; it’s about having the right pieces for every occasion.
It’s one of the few destinations where your day can move quickly between completely different settings: a morning hike up Table Mountain, lunch by the ocean or an afternoon in the vineyards—and you will likely experience all 4 seasons while doing it. The challenge isn’t what to wear, it’s how to pack for that level of variety without overcomplicating it.
After spending time moving between the city, coastline and Winelands, here’s what I found actually works.
Build Around a Simple Outfit Formula
The easiest way to pack for Cape Town is to stop thinking in outfits and start thinking in formulas. Most of my looks followed the same structure: a strong base (like a simple black dress or white jeans and a vest), a lighter layer, and a third piece to pull everything together.
I love packing matching separates that can be worn together or with other pieces. Packing like this keeps things consistent without feeling repetitive—and means everything in your suitcase works harder.
Prioritise Layers
Cape Town weather shifts constantly—warm one moment, windy the next. You’ll rarely wear just one thing all day, especially as they head into autumn.
Lightweight layers are what make your wardrobe work, allowing you to adjust your outfit without needing to change it entirely.
Pack for Your Real Itinerary
It’s easy to overpack for the version of the trip you imagine, rather than the one you’ll actually have and when you are on the move, you would rather not have to unpack and repack an entire suitcase.
Cape Town days tend to revolve around walking, long lunches, beach stops and wine tastings, so your wardrobe should reflect that, not compete with it. Lean on accessories and silk scarves to really switch up your look.
Comfort Is Non-Negotiable
You’ll move around more than you expect, whether that’s exploring the city or navigating uneven coastal paths.
The pieces you’ll wear the most are the ones that feel easy; think shoes you can rely on and outfits you don’t have to think about once they’re on.
Bring One Elevated Piece
The nightlife in the city is fantastic, there are so many great restaurants and bars to try and although the majority of places may lean more relaxed, it helps to have one piece that sharpens everything else, whether that’s a blazer, a structured dress or a great pair of sunglasses.
It’s what makes simple outfits feel finished without adding effort.
