A Beauty Editor Shares Her Signature Spring Scents (And How You Can Find Yours)
Alice Hartwell
Spring has never smelt better.
Scent tells a different story every season. The first floral, honeyed spritzes of spring possess a unique, charming, irresistibly sweeter following the deep, musky notes of autumn and winter.
Stacy-Jayne Archer, the Senior Creative Marketing Manager for perfumer Miller Harris, echoes, musing “As the season shifts, the instinct is to reach for scents that feel lighter, more transparent and alive with movement, florals, greens, citrus and soft musks echo the rhythms of the natural world at this time of year, which is why they feel so instinctively right.”
These intuitive pulls return with expected consistency, but as with all beauty products, trends ebb and flow. Archer shares, “One of the most interesting directions this spring is a move toward garden realism, perfumers are increasingly interested in capturing the scent of the entire plant—leaves, sap, stems and even soil—rather than focusing solely on the flower itself. Green and slightly wild compositions feel particularly relevant as people gravitate toward fragrances that feel closer to nature.”
“At Miller Harris, spring is no longer defined by the obvious codes of floral scents,” she continues, speaking on the common confines of spring fragrance. “Instead, it’s expressed through a more expansive, layered sensibility, one that captures the shifting textures of the season rather than a single note in bloom. Florals remain present, but reframed, softened, and woven into a broader olfactive narrative of citrus, tea, woods, and gentle spice.”
How to Choose a Signature Spring Scent, According to an Expert
Choosing a new fragrance is a truly personal ritual; the power scents have over our moods and everyday outlook feels consistently transformative. When shopping this spring, Archer shares tips for finding perfumes that will make passersby double-take:
“The most distinctive fragrances are rarely the most ubiquitous. Instead of focusing solely on major big-brand launches, it’s often more rewarding to explore niche, independent fragrance houses where perfumers tend to work with greater creative freedom.”
“Fragrance behaves very differently on skin than it does on paper, and the dry-down is often where a scent reveals its most distinctive character. Wearing a fragrance throughout the day allows you to see how it evolves and whether it truly feels like your own.”
With warmer days (hopefully) not too far in sight, one of my biggest struggles is finding a scent that lingers on bare skin. Archer offers a remedy: “Hydrated skin holds scent far better than dry skin, so applying fragrance after an unscented moisturiser can make a noticeable difference. Natural fibres tend to hold fragrance beautifully, allowing lighter compositions to linger softly throughout the day.”

The latest release from one of my favourite contemporary fragrance brands, this scent packs a heavy honey note on first spritz, then settles into a light sweetness.
Turns out Harry Styles doesn’t just put out good music, he’s also pretty great when it comes to scent, too. This perfume feels like a burst of spring energy; sophisticated in its fruitiness with a citrus kick.
A cool-girl floral fragrance if there ever was one. I always respect D.S. & DURGA’s non-conformative approach, and its ability to capture such a specific moment. Debaser in Bloom makes me think of spring and summer evenings in the garden, thick with the scent of the day.
Living up to its brand namesake, this is about as on-the-nose as a rose-scented perfume gets—it feels confident in that way. Sweet by title and nature, this is definitely one for floral devotees and ideal for a daytime spring date.
Body mists are perfect for warmer spring days or activities where fine fragrance can feel a little heavy or overpowering. This Rare Beauty mist has a honeydew melon scent, which makes it an uplifting addition to gym or on-the-go bags.
When Bella Hadid dropped her aromatherapy essential oil perfume line, I was intrigued, to say the least. A true hybrid of skincare and scent, they appeared the perfect holiday companions, and perhaps none more so than Salted Muse. One spritz instantly transports you beachside—while keeping your skin glowing and hydrated. Bonus.
If chic scent bottles could sway me (they can), then Stora Skuggan has my heart. Aesthetics aside, the delicately musky Monkeyflower, wildly popular in Victorian England, is a botanical complexity that can’t help but feel intoxicating.
Perfect for smaller handbags or subtle scent application, the Rare Beauty perfume balms offer an alternative approach to fragrance. They’re ideal for those who avoid strong scents, but can go on a little oily, so allow time to dry down.
I don’t believe all spring fragrances should feel reminiscent of warm days. This scent makes me think of a fresh morning after rain, slightly masculine in nature with additions of seaweed, salt and sandalwood.
